The opposition Member of Parliament from Lumley in Freetown, Hon Mamoud Kamara, has disclosed in the Chambers of Parliament that “Never again will bad laws be passed in Parliament.”
“When MPs were beaten one side was punished in the Well alone,” he recalled a situation in Sierra Leone’s parliament when 10 MPs were removed unconstitutionally.
The MP made the disclosure on Tuesday 7th May 2024 when giving his felicitation for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Parliament, Hon Sengepoh Solomon Thomas and Hon Ibrahim Tawa Conteh.
He thanked the two speakers to be the youngest since the formation of Parliament.
The MP further that Sierra Leone has much expectations from the young speakers elected in Parliament.
According to Hon Mamoud Kamara Lumley people are very much happy for the position Hon Tawa Conteh, adding that the Deputy Speaker has been a great redeemer of the people.
He pointed out that it is a blessing for the 6th Parliament to have these products from the 5th Parliament.
Hon Kamara, therefore, urged the two speakers to ensure that never again to allow commotion in Parliament as well and never again to accept intolerance where police officers enter into the Chambers and beat up opposition members.
He revealed that the Speakers should also ensure that never again should MPs be kicked out like the 10 opposition MPs who were thrown out and replaced with none elected MPs.
In her statement Hon Rosy Kanu said Hon. Tawa is a strong advocate for women.
“You washed your hands well and now eating with kings, be humble, loyal and studious,” Hon. Rossy Kanu.
Hon Kanu further said that Hon Tawa is here for “he-for-she” and so he will ensure that female MPs are protected and promoted.
Hon. Unpha Sorie Gbassay Koroma said it’s a blessing to be headed by a speaker and deputy speaker who are products of the Fourth and Fifth Parliament, distinguishing the old and new speaker.
In her statement, the MP from Moyamba District, Hon Veronica Kadie Sesay also expressed thanks and appreciations to the two Speakers and urged them to make Sierra Leone to be proud again.
Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay commends the elevation of three women out of the 42 into the leadership hierarchy.
“If youngsters can do it the women can do it too, think about women and we should not be muzzled,” she said.
