The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, says “I will not go anywhere.”
“If I leave power; I will not run away for nobody. I will rather go to my village, Tonko Limba and do farming there quietly.”
He spoke at the Administrative conference room in Parliament.
He promised that he would never go overseas to do odd jobs for people, adding that most Sierra Leoneans living in overseas are working either as cleaners or doing minor jobs for their survival.
The Deputy Speaker was addressing officials of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, in relation to the Auditor General’s latest Report.
According to Hon Tawa Conteh, because of the failure by people in positions of trust to do due diligence, that accounts for the billions of leones to become unaccounted for.
He pointed out that monies that supposed to help government to succeed are still in the hands of either private individuals or institutions.
He maintained that his committee would ensure that some of these institutions and individuals pay these monies back, or get themselves arrested or punished for depriving the government of a much needed revenue generation that is meant for development purposes.
“In my quest to recoup these monies, I will not even hesitate to punish anyone. If anyone reports me to my boss (President Julius Maada Bio); that individual will just be making the situation worse for him or herself.”
“Because I will respond to my boss that that individual is sabotaging him as President on his development strides,” he said.
What is more heartrending, Hon Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, said was that most of the financial statements and documents presented to his committee were scanty, fake and some documents failed to align with what is provided in the Public Financial Management Act.
“Even when the Act talks about deducting, withholding of taxes, but there are still huge arrears, owned by institutions and individuals,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, he said, the Public Account Committee is working towards helping President Julius Maada Bio on achieving his development agendas.
The Deputy Speaker said in other to open effective and efficient service delivery within the PAC, he has set up a PAC subcommittee that will look at the progress of the committee and how MDAs and other sectors as well as PAC are making progresses so far.
He pointed out that the subcommittee will be looking at compliance procedures from defaulting sectors for progress.
The Chairman of the Public Account Committee went on to say that in two weeks he had recovered what the ACC and other institutions could not recover within a six months period.
