Brima Kargbo, a driver has been sent to remand for allegedly stealing phone from a poor blind woman.
Kargbo was on Tuesday June 17, 2025 arraigned before Magistrate John Manso Fornah of the Pademba Road Court No.2 in Freetown on a count charge of larceny.
Police report states that Kargbo on Wednesday May 28, 2025 at Freetown Road, Lumley in Freetown did steal one Techno Spark 20 mobile phone valued at three thousand leones (NLe3,000), a plastic bag containing twenty cups of rice valued at one hundred leones (NLe100) and a fiscal cash of one hundred leones (NLe 100) to the total value of three thousand two hundred leones (NLe3,200) property of Aminata Taylor.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Theresa Ballay led Aminata Taylor (blind) in examination in chief as the first prosecution witness in the matter.
Taylor informed the court that she is blind and homeless from Bo District and that she sleeps in front of Zenith Bank at Lumley.
She explained that on Wednesday May 28, 2025, she was sleeping together with her son in front of Zenith Bank at Lumley as their usual shelter, when suddenly Kargbo came between herself and her son while it was raining at around 5am.
Taylor furthered that her some who could see was shivering with heavy cold when Kargbo took her bag, two phones and NLe100 cash that was in her possession.
The blind beggar revealed that when the cleaner arrived at Zenith Bank, and realized that there were unknown people among the homeless beggars, and shouted thief and Kargbo attempted to run but was captured by the security guard.
Taylor told the court that when she woke up, she realized that her belongings were missing and she alerted everyone, and one of the men told her to hold on to Kargbo for her things. The blind woman said she was led to Kargbo and she grasped his trousers and when other people detached him, they found Taylor’s button phone in his pocket which made them to arrest and take him to the Lumley Police Station.
Taylor added that she also made statement to police that day.
During cross-examination, Kargbo who was unrepresented and questioned Taylor if she saw him took her phone, but the woman replied that she is blind and did not see him.
She however asserted that her button phone was retrieved from his pocket.
Magistrate Fornah did not grant Kargbo bail and sent him to remand at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown.
The matter was adjourned to June 25, 2025.
