In the West African state of Niger Republic which draws global attention over the Military Coup, a representative of the US Secretary of State has visited Niamey the Capital held a two hour talks with the resistible Junta Regime, an Ecowas meeting in Accra was pushed to the Nigeria capital Abuja, four of Ecowas member states namely Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso and of late Niger are held by the military.
As Ecowas deadline express, all three military held states have pledge amongst themselves and informs the Ecowas Secretariat that they will not contribute its Army to take part in any counter attack. They should many skeptics say, if Ecowas is to overcome the regime and install the former President who was democratically elected, the Military countries will think the next destination will be theirs. The resistance continues unabated.
The big blow of military coups in Francophone West Africa has weaken French politics in West Africa in particular. The Malian military government asked all French nationals to leave including the French troops that were stationed there.
The present relations is not cordial, neighbouring Guinea has a reputation of resisting French rule since the days of Sekou Toure’, Burkina Faso slapped the French assimilation policy makers when they changed the name from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara coup brought to an end French cordial rapport. Many counter coups had followed.
Both Anglophone and Lisophone West African countries support an Ecowas immediate intervention to further stabilize their civilian democratic rule, the Americans, French and elsewhere are also supportive of an Ecowas intervention, if there is any additional materials and logistics they may need, that will not be the problem. The problem has posed a serious challenge to the February crowned President Tinubu of Nigeria who now chairs the Ecowas community. Comparatively Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal have a larger army for the purpose, the question is, what other consideration that may hold Ecowas countries for so long?
