The country’s capital City Freetown is filled with dirt as authorities concerned have woefully failed to manage the heaps of dirt in the citizens midst.
The Freetown City Council with her Worship the Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyerr being the leader has not done anything to keep the city clean despite collecting daily tax from Freetonians.
The central business district of the capital city is stale with strong smell of urine and toilet as people are urinating all over the place uncontrollably. There is shortage of public toilets around the CBD areas making people to resist the call of nature in a very civilize manner.
There is pile of dirt along the major streets of Freetown because there are no street sweepers to remove this dirt from the street.
During the era of former Mayor Franklyn Bode Gibson the city streets were always swept well by aged women and the burial grounds of our beloved ones were cleaned every last Saturday in a month.
The street gutters are filled with plastic waste which some time blocking the passage of these wastes as this will lead to leakage of these gutters overflowing the street with contaminated water.
The filthiness in the city is rife and if measures are not put in place to control this filthiness will lead to major outbreak of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea and even Ebola. The unhealthy status quo of the city has made the lives of citizens prone to death during short sickness. All over the place is crammed with dirt and the Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyerr should not forget that she promised Freetonians a green, clean and smart city which will make her way for a second term in office.
From the look at things Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyerr has failed to turn Freetown into a clean and smart city free from the strong and staunch smell of urine and toilet.
Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyerr and her MDU (Mayor’s Delivery Unit) have been wholly criticized as a much talk and less work MDU who is busy collecting awards and accolades for unseen accomplishments.
Despite she has been having challenges as an opposition party Mayor, but she must work hard to address challenges that she promised the people she will address.
Street traders are casting blames on the Mayor for failing to provide them with a better market place where vehicles and pedestrians will not disturbed their trading.
According to some Abacha Street traders it is Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyerr’s duty to make sure they are well protected under one market umbrella and thereby easing the burden of filthiness and sickness isn the state.
Even street traders are lamenting over the staunch and stench smell around their daily business places as they are paying market dues to council officials on a daily basis.
According to candid views Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyerr should carry the burden of the traders who were forcefully removed from doing street trading just after the August 10 2022 protest because she had failed to provide them with a market space.
Freetown city is hazardous and unhealthy to host investors of any sort as the urine and toilet scent all over the city will compel them to flee.
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development should provide fund to Freetown City Council on a timely basis to implement and speed up the works of the council and to ensure that keeping the city green and alive is actualized.
The Local Government and FCC must work collectively to sanitize the over 200 year old once forgone city in order to sell the good image of the country to investors abroad.
