The embattled 2018 Presidential Flag bearer of the All People’s Congress party Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara is having an albatross around his neck as chances of running for the flag bearer position in the APC ahead of the June 24th 2023 Presidential polls is slowly dwindling due to the lot of alleged corruption cases hanging on his head.
The Presidential hopeful of the main opposition APC party is standing trial of eighteen counts corrupt charges before Justice Adrian Fischer as ruling is set to be delivered early next year January 13th 2023.
The most popular contestant for the APC flag bearer position is allegedly involved in misappropriation of $4 million dollars while he was serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the erstwhile government of Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma. The $4 million dollar that was allegedly misappropriated was disbursed by the government of Sierra Leone for the reconstruction of the Chancery building in New York, United States.
The fate of Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara to contest for the APC flag bearer race ahead of the party’s forthcoming National Delegates Conference is now in the hands of the Judiciary if whether or not he is culpable of corruption which will instantly delete him from the race to contest. If found guilty of corruption Dr. Samura Kamara’s absence will create a level playing field for other hopeful contestants that want to run for the Presidency next year with the incumbent President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.
Dr. Samura Kamara is seen by many of his loyal supporters as an erudite Economist and Technocrat who during the eleven years rule of Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma transgress the country’s economy to a middle income country with the second fastest growing economy in the world as there used to be mining Companies all over the place with huge exportation of iron ore thereby boosting the country’s GDP while he served as Minister of Finance and Economic Development.
He is also viewed by many Sierra Leoneans as a humble civil servant who served as Financial Secretary in the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) a junta regime led by President Julius Maada Bio after he succeeded in deposing Valentine Esegrabo Melvin Strasser as the then leader of the coup regime. Dr. Samura Kamara’s name was also mentioned in the misappropriation of $18 million dollars by the junta regime which is still left unexplained to the public despite claiming to have an unblemished record in his Civil service career.
Whether or not Dr. Samura Kamara will be exonerated from his 16 counts corruption allegation has created a big room for doubt if he does not emerge victorious from the court who will then be the flag bearer of the APC party in the forthcoming Presidential election.
With the case now closed and his learned Lawyers filed a no case submission against the state and the ruling will determine whether the no- case submission filed by the Defense team will let him to actively contest the upcoming general elections.
The Anti-Corruption Commission lead Prosecutor Calvin T. Mantesebo have closed their case after successfully presenting sixteen major and minor witnesses who testified on oath before Justice Adrian Fischer.
Dr. Samura Kamara’s Lawyers were then instructed by the judge to file in all their no-case submission to the court on or before the ending of this year while he also ordered the Legal team of the ACC to file its response before the 13th January 2023 for judgment to be delivered on the said date.
The erudite Justice Adrian Fischer called on both counsels that he will use the literature and text of Garberville on a no-case submission in delivering his rulings.
He warned that the court will not entertain any delay of filing and submission of all backup documents stating that they will move ahead with whatever documents that are presented before the court.
