President Bio has lately addressed the nation on human trafficking issues that his government is confronting with over the years.
He informed Sierra Leoneans that since the Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act (2022) was passed; his government has made intensified efforts to combating human trafficking by expanding securitized births and deaths registration, civil registration, and ID management systems as well as establishing a state secretariat to reduce “statelessness.”
He made the submissions on Tuesday 6th August, 2024 at the State Opening of Parliament.
He is said his government is urgently addressing the threat of illicit drug trafficking and addiction, particularly the rise in synthetic drug use, such as kush, which has led to increased fatalities among youths.
He said they declared a National Emergency on Drugs and Substance Abuse in April and established the National Task Force on Drugs and Substance Abuse to address drugs and substance abuse through a comprehensive Strategy.
“We will continue to enhance psychosocial services, skills training for rehabilitated addicts, and law enforcement against illicit drug activities” he assured.
Additionally, he said his government will advance mental health care by enacting comprehensive mental health laws this year.
