Reports reaching Africa24 newspaper have revealed that a Sierra Leonean by the name Hadi Bah life is in severe danger and is presumed to have died in his hideout following his disappearance sometime in 2019.
According to credible reports, Hadi was declared wanted by senior leaders and members of the female ‘Bondo’ secret society better known as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM); for what they described as violation of their society rules by forcefully entering into their initiation bush which they deemed as an abominable act for a male gender to do.
Hadi’s action to enter the women’s secret bush was triggered by the ‘Bondo’ members’ decision to forcefully initiate his wife Selina Bah into their secret society against her wish as sources say a three years old girl child died after undergoing the orthodox female genital mutilation at the very ‘Bondo’ bush where Selina was taken into.
Bearing that bitter pain in mind, according to creditable sources, Hadi reluctantly braved into the bush to rescue his wife Selina in order to avoid bitter experience of the little girl that died in the ‘Bondo’ bush.
The decision to initiate Hadi’s wife, Selina was to fulfill ‘Bondo’ society regulation that when a senior member who holds a senior most position dies, her daughter will ultimately replace her in that position and failure to accept the demand will lead to far-reaching consequences including death.
According to reports, when the ‘Bondo’ members’ realized that Hadi had escaped with his wife Selina from the initiation bush where she was held for the rite, both of them were declared wanted. They became wanted for their crimes by entering the bush prohibited for men and his wife’s refusal to be initiated in accordance with the society law.
Mindful of the fact their lives could be in severe danger, Hadi and wife sources confirmed reportedly fled to an undisclosed location as they know the fatal calamity that will be fall them if they are apprehended by desperate ‘Bondo’ women. Also they were quite sure of the crimes they had both committed was an abomination and punishable by death according to the customs and beliefs that no one dares do what they both did without paying with their lives.
In Sierra Leone, even though this aged old practice has been widely condemned by human right campaigners, who are insisting that such is a human right violation, given that the circumcision of the female organ without sterilized instruments could be detrimental to their health, yet this practice continues unabated.
It is also a fact that this practice is common among top politicians in Sierra Leone who contribute hugely into this practice to gain favor during elections. For this reasons the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is almost impossible to stop in Sierra Leone, because of the strong support they are getting from top government officials.
