The Advocacy Network for Girls Sierra Leone Parliament is an organization that is actively advocating for gender equality, the prevention of early marriage, and community engagement to create a supportive environment for girls.
On March 20th, 2025, the Network visited the office of the opposition Chief Whip, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, to showcase the activities they have undertaken since the inception of the initiative and outlined their plans for future implementation.
The President of the organization, Hon. Subirah M. Kamara, provided an overview of the organization’s work, emphasizing its commitment to advocating for girls’ rights in the country. She also highlighted some of the challenges the organization is facing, which are hindering their ability to achieve their goals.
Minister of Justice, Hon. Bashiratu M. Mambu, expressed her gratitude to the opposition Chief Whip for his exemplary leadership and long-standing advocacy for girls’ and women’s empowerment.
She shared that as a child, the opposition Chief Whip had been an inspiration to many young girls in the nation, and she was honored to meet with him.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the progress of the nation, the Girls Advocacy Network for Sierra Leone Parliament presented a prestigious award to Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara for his exemplary leadership.
The Chief Whip thanked the Network for acknowledging his work and expressed his enthusiasm for such interactions. He noted that, as a father of three daughters, his focus has always been on creating a conducive environment for women and girls. He also highlighted his role as an advocate for the Gender Equality Act.
The Whip also addressed the ongoing issue surrounding the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), specifically the deprivation of many students from taking the exams due to the Continuous Assessment (CASS) system. He clarified that the principals and the West African Examination Council are not responsible for the issue; insisting that the problem lies with the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education. Despite raising this matter since 2022, the Ministry has yet to provide a resolution.
He further urged the affected students to refrain from violence, as discussions are ongoing to address their concerns.
Meanwhile, Hon. Kamara assured the Network that their concerns would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for swift action.
