The opposition leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo has strongly criticized the government’s apparent lack of seriousness in implementing the Tripartite Committee’s recommendations.
He emphasized that many key resolutions, particularly those concerning the release of political detainees from the opposition APC party remain unfulfilled over a year since the agreement for national unity was signed.
In a passionate statement, Hon. Kargbo questioned why critical tripartite meetings are scheduled to clash with important parliamentary sessions.
He defended his absence from such meetings by highlighting the constitutional role and independence of Parliament, asserting that he is answerable to the people, not to Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh.
He disclosed that the Chief Minister recently called him, questioning his public statements. Kargbo said he responded firmly, stating: “I was not appointed, I was elected.” He warned against any attempt to control or dictate his engagements, especially when those attempts come from non-legislative authorities.
Hon. Kargbo also proposed that Hon. Dr. Unpha Koroma, a senior MP, represented Parliament at the Tripartite Committee when scheduling conflicts arise.
He insisted that ECOWAS Parliament and national responsibilities must be managed with seriousness and transparency.
He lamented that many APC members remain in jail or exile despite agreements to release them, saying, “They are suffering and dying in jail.” According to him, this demonstrates a serious lack of political will from the government, undermining the credibility of the reconciliation process.
Hon. Kargbo concluded by reiterating his commitment to representing the people and called on the government to show genuine intent and action toward peace, accountability, and national unity.
