Members of the Civil Society Consortium on Community Accountability and Service Delivery have on Saturday March 15th 2025 lauded the vital work being Undertaken by Securiport at the Freetown International Airport.
Addressing a news conference held at the Child Welfare Society Office at 89 Fort Street, in Freetown, the Coordinator, Hawa Koroma said the airport is well secured. She said Securiport has been operating in Sierra Leone since 2012 under a contractual agreement with the government through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Immigration Department. She said the Institution has also created employment opportunities for over one hundred Sierra Leoneans. She said the presence of Securiport at the airport has been vital to ensure the safety of travellers through the implementation of modern integrated immigration control system, stressing that the security of the airport is Paramount in preventing threats and mitigating risks at national entry points.
” The Consortium highly commend President Julius Maada Bio’s government for transforming the airport now regarded as one of the premier airports in Africa,” Madam Koroma said. She said Securiport has implemented a robust system that collects and stores travellers data at the Immigration airport points. She said they have conducted interactive background checks based on biometric and document verification, adding that they detect threats and risk associated with immigration and national security. She said Securiport also analysis and report security data for informed decision making, providing tools for the passenger information unit, managing e-visa online platform for the Immigration Department among others. She pointed out that Securiport has experts at the airport that have the capacity to crack down criminals at the airport. She pleaded to the government to include the US$25 security fee in the ticket to ensure safety and convenience. She emphasized that passengers are facing challenges in paying the US$25 security fee in the ticket.
In his contribution, the National Coordinator of the Consortium, William Sao- Lamin said they are working closely with government to educate the public on ongoing activities. . They are not opposition political party but rather complementing the work of government. He said Securiport is operating in forty countries around the world. He stressed that the government is working hard to improve on that. He noted that passengers are grumbling about the US$25 for any passenger that comes in and goes out of the country, adding that, they are there to ensure that the airport well secured.
“We have been complimenting the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This is the second time we are talking about Securiport,” Sao-Lamin said.
Philip Lansana said they started civil society activism after the civil war, adding that they look at issues critically for the good of the country.
