The proprietor of Gento Group construction company, Mohamed Gento Kamara, is lately on the bad book of Sierra Leoneans.
Mr. Kamara who is well-known as Gento, came into the limelight as head of a civil engineering firm after he had built a crooked and narrowed road at Hill Cut in Freetown over the past years.
Sierra Leoneans then held him to a high esteemed to have been able to satisfactorily built a crooked and narrow path road, Hill Cut, which stretches from Kingherman junction downtown to Hill Station.
He was among the few Sierra Leonean engineers who was entrusted by the previous government with contracts to build roads in Freetown and in some parts in the country.
He was on the bedroses of former president Koroma. He was loved as he won bidding projects to construct roads.
However, the local engineer is notorious for his ‘snailpaced’ projects.
He was faced with huge criticisms among eagerly anticipated Sierra Leoneans who wanted the Hill Cut road to be finished early due to citizens’ constraints.
Gento Group couldn’t hand over the road to Sierra Leoneans as it took him years to complete it.
“That is why government sometimes refuses to give road contracts to Sierra Leoneans because they have so many problems” a youth road labourer once claimed.
He employed, said the youth, only few workers doing labourous jobs with few machines.
Under the previous government, the engineer was understandable a business man than a politician.
But now he is a more a politician than a business man.
A business man works hard to satisfy his client.
A politician is known for his sweet tongue.
Gento goes for a mayorial position in Freetown under the party of SLPP ( Sierra Leone People’s Party).
Under the laws of Sierra Leone, it is a crime for contractors not respecting bidding procedures and contractural agreements.
Contracts offered to private engineering firms are meant to be finished as agreed.
Gento Group is a private company whose reputation is at stake in the country and beyond.
The proprietor’s integrity is questioned as he fails to complete the many roads across the country.
He is under contract by the past government to construct main roads in Waterloo, Western Area Rural District. He is also accountable to the present government and the people of Sierra Leone to finish his road projects.
Sadly, the roads at Atengbeh town and Campbell town are incomplete.
They have been there for years only gutters are being built half way.
After some strenuous years for peddlers and riders, Fullah Town road was only unveiled last year. John Street in Fullah Town is incomplete which is on Fullah Town main road.
Despite its many population, Waterloo has very poor roads.
The unfinished roads by Gento Group in Waterloo has added to the list of delapidated streets in the Western Area Rural District.
Harshorn Street, around Waterloo’s Police Headquarters better known as ‘Post Office’, is still under construction.
Work there has stopped as Gento’s tractor alone is parked on the side way.
At Wilson Street Gento Group is approached by Africa 24 newspaper to explain the delays and why there are left out roads.
A staff of Gento Group remarked that engineers were not around and could not be reached on phone.
The popular contractor, Mohamed Gento Sheriff, still enjoys presidential favours while he underperforms as a contractor.
He is loved by president Julius Maada Bio.
But he is gradually smearing his image unknowingly among Sierra Leoneans.
