The anti-graft czar, Francis Ben Keifala Esq. has insisted that it has been difficult to change Sierra Leone for the better since independence as a result of corrupt and related practices.
He made the disturbing statement on Thursday March 6th, 2025 while updating the local media on the ongoing investigation into the matter involving 4 billion leones missing at the Freetown City Council at the ACC headquarters at Tower Hill in Freetown.
Comparing the country’s corruption situation to natural disasters including typhoons and flooding that have continued to ravage countries like USA, Mr. Keifala insists that Sierra Leoneans especially those in public offices have remained typhoons who have continued to wreck the nation through their nefarious acts.
“We’re disasters for ourselves. It appears certain people still do not want the development of this nation,” Commissioner Keifala charged.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Keifala stated that the graft has reduced to appreciable level since he took the office six years ago, revealing that corruption was at 70% high as compared to now which he said stands at 40%.
He stressed that they are ready to run after those who feel they can misuse the country’s resources and go scot free. He said the fight against corruption has been difficult as a result of leadership failure, noting that those in authority have failed to monitor the use of state funds and other resources. The ACC chief admitted however that until we stand together as a people, it will be difficult to combat the menace which he emphasized has eaten deep into the fabrics of this tiny impoverished nation.
