The Legal Aid Board with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provided legal representation to two hundred and sixteen (216) convicted inmates at the Prison Court in Sefadu on May 30 to June 6, 2024. All the inmates were serving their sentences at the Sefadu Correctional Center. The court was presided over by His Lordship Justice Monfred Sesay.
Two hundred and seven (207) of the inmates were released upon review of their cases. These include 195 males and 12 females. Among those released were 58 convicted with frequenting, 104 convicted with unlawful possession of drugs commonly called Kush and 29 convicted with larceny amongst others.
Nine of the 216 cases reviewed had their sentences upheld. These included three convicted with fraudulent conversion, three convicted with conspiracy and three others convicted with unlawful possession of drugs, Robbery with Violence and Larceny respectively. Eight (8) of the inmates were males while one was a female.
All the convicts in the prison court were defended by Legal Aid Counsel A.O. Kamara.
The Executive Director for the Legal Aid Board, Ms. Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hancles commended the Legal Aid Counsel for Kono, A.O. Kamara, Senior Paralegal, Kemoh Kandeh and the other staff for working with the Judiciary in ensuring a successful Prison Court.
