At the invitation of the Penn Institute for Urban Research at the University of Pennsylvania, Her Worship the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE, will be formally presented with the 2021 Lawrence C. Nussdorf Urban Leadership Prize.
The award presentation was previously delayed due to COVID-related restrictions that prevented in-person gatherings. The special ceremony will take place during the Institute’s 20th Annual Urban Leadership Forum and will honor Mayor Aki-Sawyerr for her outstanding leadership in promoting resilient, sustainable, and inclusive urban development around the world.
The event, which is open to the public, will take place on April 25, 2025, at the University of Pennsylvania’s Meyerson Hall, Lower Gallery (210 S. 34th Street, Philadelphia) at 11am. Other recipients will include Patrick Harker, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and Enrique Peñalosa, globally renowned urban visionary and former two-term Mayor of Bogotá.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr’s recognition highlights her transformative achievements in Freetown, including the construction and operation of the city’s first-ever wastewater treatment plant, the digitalization and expansion of the property rate system and the planting and monitoring of 1.2 million trees under the #FreetownTheTreeTown initiative.
