Several Lecturers of the Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) have told this medium that, the administration is on the verge of terminating their service in spite of their efforts over the years.
They said they have made greater efforts to ensuring that the institution gets advanced status, from being a college to a university.
This medium has been informed that most of these lecturers had been re-categorized and had been given letters to the effect for a transition from polytechnic to a university, which may require higher qualifications that befits “university academic rank.”
According to sources, the administration, of few staff, handpicked certain loyalists to replace those lecturers who have been in the service for over 20 to 30 years.
What is more disturbing, they said the the interview that was done for new recruits was done in the dark, not publicly, and many were not informed thereby leaving them in doubt on their fate.
“This secret interview was only noticed by some of our colleagues lecturers who had gone through the recruitment process. We are concerned over the clandestine interviews especially so when it has got to a university education level,” one of the lecturers alarmed.
Besides, according to lecturers, their end of service as polytechnic status was not fully paid to them yet, they said, they are still working assiduously imparting knowledge to students.
“Almost all of us as lecturers are working on contract basis at the moment, and if the administration or government would want to employ anyone, that must be made known to us all to be able to apply. Why the secrecy? ” a concern lecture had asked.
They said they first hopedthey were part of the transition from a polytechnic status to university as lecturers due to their sacrifices made over the years but the opposite exists.
“We made Milton Margai to university status and we must not be treated badly,” they stressed.
The disadvantaged lecturers claimed that Eastern and EBK universities incorporate all those lecturers that taught when the institution was a polytechnic and now to a university, they are considered as lecturers. They said that should be “the way to go,” praising EBK administration.
At a meeting held on campus on Tuesday 14th January 2025, the Principal of the University, Professor Kanu allegedly denied allegations that lecturers who reported and raised concerns on their status to the Teaching Service Commission, have done otherwise described as “they beat-gone.”
Professor Kanu said the lecturers that the interview has just started and it goes by stage, adding all lecturers will be interviewed and it should not be cause for complain.
Other school of thought informed this medium that, Professor Kanu is known for being strict and has track record of ensuring due diligence in public any work space.
Others have said Professor Kanu believes in transformative tenets and has uncompromising stands to ensure that Milton Margai Technical University become an envy of emulation.
He assured of a level playing field to all and sundry.
