Waves of the 10th August 2023 alleged insurrection continue to haunt specific communities in Sierra Leone. State security forces are on a desperate search for several alleged protesters after key figures arrested were forced to identify allies. There are clues that some persons escaped to neighbouring Republics of Liberia and Guinea after they realized that they were being line-listed for arrest.
However, our report indicates that over two hundred arrests have been made while some fifty were still at still at large.
Targeted residences are mostly in the north and west of Sierra Leone; known for their inclination to public disturbances against the current administration. This has brought waves of intermittent cordon and search raids in those selected areas.
On XX October, 2023, the neighbourhoods at Free Gospel Street, Kamasondo, Lungi, north of Sierra Leone expressed concerns over persistent visits of boys believed to be thugs of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party. In all these circumstances, police in the area had remained indifferent. Residents have also intimated that an unknown assailant was later picked up at the Lungi Garrison Barracks in the same vicinity.
While these arrests continue to be made, court proceedings over insurrection charges are already on course. With additional claims are that some military personnel were involved in the 10th August insurrection, court martial charges are also progressing.
Some suspects however arrested in these continued raids have not received charges and relatives have not been accorded access to their places of detention. According to one account, some arrests were made by party thugs of the ruling party or military personnel who did not present details of the involvement of these detainees in any protests. As this press continues to monitor the unfolding events, there are bleak prospects for the unlucky ones.
