The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) female Member of Parliament, Hon Emilia Lolloh Tongi, called on the Public Account Committee and Parliament to look into the European funded project in parliament on a road construction.
“Please Mr Deputy Speaker let us also look at the UNOPS rehabilitation project in Parliament. We want them to explain to us why the bridge linking the new building has broken within a short period”.
This is an EU4 million project but does it worth the work,” Hon Tongi said.
She pointed out that if Parliament vets other MDAs on the funded project, the PAC should start within, that is the law house.
She maintained that the construction in Parliament by the EU funded project is a ‘big sham’ and it is substandard.
“Let’s summon EU and UNOPS,” she said.
The Parliament of Sierra Leone has also declared the European Union (EU) 4m funded implemented by UNOPS as a white elephant infrastructural project sitting on a danger zone and has become a death trap.
A notice placed in Parliament states that “Notice of warning: Broken pathway.”
The notice indicated that “Please be advised that the pathway located between the main Parliament Building and the Administrative Building is currently in a poor shape. Due to the recent damage on the road in parliament, the surface there is uneven and may pose a risk to the pedestrians.”
Parliament notice further warns, “For Your Safety: Avoid using the pathway until repairs are completed; use alternative routes where possible.
The MPs again apologized in the notice posted in the well for any inconvenience that might have caused on colleague MPs.
“Be assured that we are working to address the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.”
The notice was published and signed by Mr. Gilbert Bosco Nhabay Ag. who is the Deputy Clerk of Parliament.
It could be recalled that this medium had informed visitors and MPs about the dangers of broken pathway on the bridge linking the Well of Parliament and the Administrative Building in Parliament long ago.
MPs who spoke to this medium have also raised serious concerns over the broken pathway on the bridge in Parliament.
One of the MPs told this medium that, they are now happy that Parliament had finally responded and cautioned visitors and all workers in Parliament to be careful about the dangerous footpath on the bridge which was constructed last year by UNOPS.
“I don’t even understand why a £3M EU funded projects could not even stand the test of time in few years after its construction,” the MP doubted.
Osman Marah, a visitor informed this medium that the taxpayers’ monies are going down the drain due to bad implementation of the projects that have to do with developments in Sierra Leone.
The MP has attributed the UNOPS Project as substandard and has urged for for a proper probing to be done.
Few months ago, former Speaker of Parliament, Dr Chernor Abass Bundu, also had raised serious concerns of safety on the road constructed in parliament due to the substandard work done there.
He said at the time that the contractors should face critical questioning regarding the work.
Leakages, cracks and a life-risk threats are visible in on the badly built road by a private entity.
