In conformity with the constitutional provision of section 83 and the Third Schedule of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991) in tandem with Standing Orders 1 (a) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, the New Member of Parliament, Hon. Abu Bakarr Fofanah of Kenema District, on Thursday, 03/07/2025, subscribed to the Oath of Office as a Member of Parliament representing Kenema District.
It could be recalled that the former Member of Parliament representing Kenema District, Hon. Musa Peter Moigua passed on in May this year.
Before the swearing-in of the new Member of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Segepoh Solomon Thomas announced to Members of Parliament that a correspondence from the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone had declared that Hon. Abu Bakarr Fofanah had been duly elected as Member of Parliament for Kenema District. The Speaker has therefore acted in accordance with constitutional provisions and Standing Orders and directed the Clerk of Parliament to administer the Oath of Office to the new Member of Parliament.
The Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Gilbert Bosco N’habay, administered the Oath of Office on behalf of the Clerk of Parliament.
“I, Honourable Abu Bakarr Fofanah of Kenema District having been elected as a Member of Parliament, do hereby in the name of Allah, swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Republic of Sierra Leone as by law established, that I will uphold and defend the Constitution of Sierra Leone, and that I will faithfully and conscientiously discharge the duties of a Member of Parliament, so help me Allah,” he swore.
In his congratulatory courtesy, Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas wholeheartedly welcomed the New Member of Parliament for his reunion to the House of Parliament. Speaker Thomas reiterated and encouraged the new legislator to be effective in attending parliamentary activities.
Speaker Thomas also urged the new Member to be diligent in his service to the nation and to the House of Parliament with specificity.
The Speaker also informed the Hon. Abu Bakarr Fofanah that he had developed what many would call a bad habit of calling out names of Members of Parliament who attend sittings in time. He said the novelty of calling out names of MPs who attend sittings in time is to let their constituents know that their MPs are indeed representing them well. Speaker Thomas concluded by encouraging the new MP to do everything he could to live by the dictates of the oath he had taken.
