Salamatu Kanu, a mother of two daughters, says teachers, in a school where her children attend, are only collecting “fast money” from them the parents without teaching the children effectively.
“That is what they do now,” they teach less and collect money from us every day.
“They ask for Wednesday ceremonial fee-whatever they call it, they collect on Friday and Saturday for lesson fees,” she explained.
The mother who is so angry about this situation wishes government to intervene on the issue and settle it at once. “It bothers me a lot,” she said.
If parents and guardians of school-going children would have to pay extra-money during school periods, it means that not everyone will have their child educated again or go to high school.
Salamatu’s children are sitting the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) at Network (Four Mile) in Waterloo.
This year the exam is set on Saturday May 3rd 2025.
“We will have to wake up by 6:00 am to prepare them bread and pepper sauce and tea. All that cost us a lot of money these days when things are so expensive in the market,” says the parent.
There have been many extra-charges added on to primary school expenses, making it burdensome for all parents having children in primary schools.
While people pay for Wednesday ceremonial fees without any valid reason given on why that is asked for to be paid by parents, there are also strings-attached on schooling costs these days.
Apart from children asking to pay Le 5 or above for Wednesday as ceremonial day fee, soap, face tissue, toilet rolls, are either paid for or bought by parents.
Parents say all these are conditions that never had existed before.
