In part one of this topic, we promised to give you countdown of how our successive governments have incessantly ignore things that have in many occasions led to terrible if not fatal situations which Sierra Leoneans will never forget in a hurry.
For those who have been and still following developments in the country over the years with keen interest believe that our governments’ lackadaisical attitudes to take hard decisions importantly to protect the lives of its citizens as enshrined in our constitution may not be far from what they described as “bad politics” because they believe that it might their chances of retaining in power, thus, will always turn blind eyes to serious issues that have the propensity to cause memorable havoc.
Examples of this unwarranted situation are unlimited.
- No government has ever been serious with the fight to remove traders from the notorious Sani Abacha Street even though they are very much aware of the ramifications, including but not limited to unwarranted accidents, thievery and other related criminal activities and the never ending traffic congestion among others.
- Relocation of slum dwellers
Like the Sani Abacha Street, the relocation of dwellers from slum communities particularly around the capital to safer places has remained an unsolved problem despite previous governments under Late President Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabba of SLPP and erstwhile President Ernest Bai Koroma paid many of those inhabitants and gave each of them a portion of land to relocate. The consequences of their refusal to move have been grave including flooding, frequent fire breakout, drug abuse and other criminal activities.
Sea Disasters
- Sea travelling is another problem especially with the local canoes popularly known here as “pampa.” Even though it’s prohibited to overload those boats as it’s mandatory for each passenger to wear lifejacket, these laws are flouted with liberty which has led to numerous untimely and immeasurable deaths.
- Negative attitude of health workers. This situation cannot be overemphasized. Even though it has become unbearable, but people have resigned to live with it like the rest of other problems because solution is not in sight. It’s no hidden secret that the negative attitude of healthcare providers has caused many innocent lives to perish. All they care for is to put government under undue pressure to increase their salaries and other emoluments, whilst they abandon their workplaces and clients with impunity.
Broader Picture
Like stated above, these problems will ever remain unsolved until someday some time serious government look at them with distinct lens and address them holistically with the least fear of being criticized, condemned or lose power altogether.
