One of Sierra Leone’s finest and Iron Lady in politics is outstandingly a doyenne in politics.
Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr epitomizes a symbol of glaring hope for women and girls in Sierra Leone who are craving hard to break the glass ceiling in Sierra Leone politics.
Since 2018 when elected mayor of Freetown, she had been enduring the furnace and plumes in the country’s politics as she pocketed insults from pro-politicians and supporters of the sitting government, Sierra Leone People’s Party.
Being an opposition member of All People’s Congress, Madam Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has blamed key figures in government to have undermined her leadership role.
She was believed to be drowning in the ocean as she was always at loggerheads with particularly the minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Tamba Lamina and Chief administrator at Freetown City Council, Festus Kallay and had faced a number of resistances by workers in the council.
The outgone Mayor, Mrs. Sawyerr had been accusing FCC’s Chief Administrator, Mr. Festus Kallay for slowing down progress on implementing many of FCC’s projects. In a number of occasions, FCC’s Chief Administrator failed to sign out documents for approval.
Mr. Kallay would defend his action citing due procedures are not followed by the Mayor.
Despite several attempts to thwart her leadership and stay in the office, Aki-Sawyerr remained unruffled by pro-government attacks, lawsuits.
Freetown’s eloquent Mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr was allegedly harassed or manhandled by unidentified thugs.
In her reign it is clear that the status quo of women politics in Sierra Leone is that a cloud of discrimination and repression against women is still hovering the skies of Sierra Leone.
Women’s representation in Sierra Leone’s politics is starkly poor as it is still dominant by men.
Since Aki-Sawyerr belongs to the opposition party, APC and probably because she is a woman, Mrs. Sawyerr was constantly facing threats to her life and several molestations to her dignity as she heads a most important office dominant by men.
Such a challenge is a clear indication that shows a bleak journey for women’s and girls’ interests in politics. But as a doyenne, Yvonne was able to withstand the heat of the kitchen in city council throughout her tenure.
She is contesting again for the Mayoral post come June 24 elections.
The rap star in politics raps out her campaign to crowds of supporters in the east of the capital March this year.
The politician is matured and unique in her own ways as she is guided by morale ethics.
The huge gathering of people at Attouga stadium in Freetown on her official declaration for a re-election shows a woman who is not only popular but loved, trusted and respected to serve the people.
That huge gathering of people at Attouga stadium who came from different communities in Chinese numbers with different occupations such as traders, bike riders, barbers, teachers, fitters, students, handicaps, Sheiks , Pastors, Chairmen, Councillors, Tribal heads, police, soldiers, nurses, football players and so on, tells a leader whose love is in the people of all kinds despite who they are, where they are from , and what they believe in life. Such a feature makes Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr to become a doyenne in Sierra Leone rocky politics.
She is a deserving candidate that is expected to yet again enjoy Freetonians vote.
