It is unprecedented that the outcome of June 24, polls was married with serious clashed amongst local and international observers’ pair with political analysts and the main opposition political party, All People’s Congress (APC) though the Electoral Commissioner for Sierra Leone, Mohamed Konneh proclaimed President Bio as winner of June 24, 2023 elections with 56.17%, and his main challenger Dr. Samura Kamara secured 41.16%.
While countless of Sierra Leoneans at home have expressed disappointments, which they believe that the electioneering process lacks transparency, accountability combine with massive malpractices. On Thursday 6 July, 2023, President ordered the Clerk of Parliament to summon the Sixth Legislature of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone in a Press statement.
“Pursuant to subsection (1) of section 86 0f the constitution of the Sierra Leone at No. 6 of the 1991, the president of the Republic of Sierra Leone has directed the clerk of parliament to convene the Sixth Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone of the second republic of Sierra Leone on Thursday July 13, 2023 in the Chamber of Parliament. Accordingly, all Members of Parliament elect are hereby informed to attend the sitting of Parliament on the said date.
The press notification highly stress on section 83 of the continuation of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991), members of parliament duly elected at the General Elections of 24, June 2023 shall, before taking his seat in Parliament, take and subscribe the Oath of office for Members Parliament as prescribed in the Third schedule of the said constitution.
Meanwhile, the APC party have resolved in a meeting held on Friday 30, June 2023 at the party’s Headquarters in Freetown, that all elected reps shall not participate at all levels of governance in Sierra Leone, and the all elected signed oath “We, the elected representatives of the APC party, as Mayors and Chairperson’s of Local Councils in the Local, Hereby wholeheartedly endorse the party’s position. We SHALL NOT participate in the Local Government infrastructures of Sierra Leone in line with the resolution of the party, referred to above, until the demands of the Party are fully met.” APC said. However, well-meaning Sierra Leoneans are completely dismay with the existing political situation in the country; the standard of living is really tough for the ordinary Sierra Leonean, only few folks can make ends meet per day, 98% of youth are jobless and peace less at the moment with governance system.
