Sierra Leoneans are dumb founded by the outburst of the political leaders in recent days, describing the outrage as creating political tension in the country.
Last week, the Sierra Leone’s ruling SLPP party Chairman Jimmy Batilo Songa, caused a political stir after making a statement calling on the country’s security forces, including the military to safeguard the forthcoming 2028 elections in favour of his SLPP party.
With most people in the country still coming to terms with the unprecedented electoral fraud of 2023 that kept President Bio and his party in power, questions are being asked as to how free and fair the 2028 elections will be.
A strong member and supporter of the main opposition APC said: “We are not afraid of what is going to happen in this country in 2028. Batilo’s call on the army and police to help the SLPP win the 2028 elections is undemocratic and unconstitutional.”
Responding to the statement of the SLPP Chairman, a Member of the Public Relations department of the opposition, Minkailu Koroma, has also issued a warning that Sierra Leone could face instability if the 2028 general elections are manipulated.
His remarks come in response to recent statements made by the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Chairman, Jimmy Batilo Songa.
Koroma emphasized the importance of transparent, credible, and peaceful elections as the foundation of democracy, noting that any attempt to undermine the electoral process could lead to widespread unrest and make the country “ungovernable.”
“If they attempt to rig the elections, the APC will not accept the results as long as it is not credible. We will make the country ungovernable.”
His comments reflect growing political tension and public concern about maintaining fairness and trust in Sierra Leone’s electoral system ahead of the next national polls.
Observers have urged both the ruling SLPP and the opposition APC to engage constructively through dialogue and uphold the principles of democratic governance to ensure peace and stability in the lead-up to the 2028 elections.
