A number of Sierra Leoneans home have expressed their deepest concerns on moves by the United States of America to deport about 1,000 unlawful migrants in Africa who have been staying up in the USA.
Speaking to some Sierra Leonean residents in Waterloo at Sierra Leone’s Western Area Rural District, they told our Africa 24 journalist that President Donald Trump, is sending deep worries to Africans whose relatives are in the US.
“We have a lot of our friends and brothers living there whose brothers, sisters and friends as well are staying and working in the United States of America. They depend on them for survival back home.”
“So, to hear that many of their brothers, sisters and relatives will be disappointed soon by Trump ( Donald Trump) is a very sad message ,” said some three men at a local green tea (Chinese ataya).
Already, these deep fears and side talks by citizens in Sierra Leone, have reached at an unproportionate levels on social media mainly on whatsapps about the conditions of migrants enlisted to be taken back to South America, Asia, and African countries.
However, statistics on the deportees could be independently verified neither has there been confirmation of the US deportees’ arrival in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone is among the countries listed with about 100 of its citizens in United States of America, ready to be transported on flight to their home country like citizens of ElSalvador, India, etc.
“He is creating chaos for lur migrant brothers and sisters in the United States.”
“I believe the US government should have first informed those they identify as illegal immigrants as decency requires.”
But, a respondent said, “what the Trump administration is doing to these groups of South Americans, Asia and African immigrants is not decent enough.” “Though they may be illegal but it is also a good thought to respect their rights and be protected,” said a Sierra Leonean resident in Waterloo, on the latest development of immigrants mass deportations from the USA following President Donald Trump newest policy to deport illegal immigrants from the USA, just days after his winning of November 2024 America’s general election.
Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has arrested more than, 500 unauthorized immigrants across the US.
Pew Research Center report says there are 11 million unauthorized immigrants in the US, which has a population of 341 million.
Many have been deported while other awaits deportations to their home countries in South America, Asia and Africa.
