Sierra Leone is set to host CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers from August 2 to 11, 2024 at the Southern Arena in Bo city.
The Women’s division champions from WAFU-A member associations and active women’s division leagues clubs are expected to travel to Sierra Leone for the annual qualification games.
The winners of the tournament will qualify for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League final.
This will be the first time that Sierra Leone will host such a tournament, bringing together over 30 players from various teams in the West African sub-region.
AS Mande of Mali emerged the winner of the last edition of the zonal qualification. They defeated the determined girls of Liberia, and then drew with Mogbwemo Queens of Sierra Leone and AS Dakar of Senegal in the group stage.
They finish top of the group to reach their second finals.
CAF Women’s Champions League is a yearly international women’s association football club competition in Africa organized by the Confederation of African Football, involving the continent’s top women’s club teams.
It is the female supplement of the CAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, the delegation team of the West Africa Zone A competition, and WAFU Zone-A executive director Mapathe Gaye from Senegal and Finance Officer Balamin Ceesay from The Gambia arrived in Sierra Leone midweek for facilities inspection.
SLFA Acting General Secretary Mohamed Benson Bawoh, Director of Competitions Sorie Ibrahim Sesay and a cross-section of the local organizing committee officially received the representatives and commenced deliberations to ensure the successful execution of the tournament. The inspection of facilities is a crucial step in the preparations, ensuring that all venues and conveniences meet the high standards required for an international competition of to-most caliber.
This tournament promises to be a significant occasion, bringing together the amazing teams in the country.
“We are committed to hosting a remarkable event that will not only showcase the talent of our women footballers but will also highlight the capacity of Sierra Leone to host some significant regional sporting events,” said Mohamed Benson Bawoh.
