Since the timetable for the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) elections was made public the wise bird has been moving from media house to media house to get the views of both members and none-members.
Before that, the President of the Association Ahmed Sahid Nasralla has assured members for gender equality and inclusive leadership within the association.
He also encourages female Journalists to contest for any leadership position in the association.
He emphasized on fairness, level playing field and equal opportunity for all aspiring candidates.
It is also understood that he cautioned the present executive and general membership to uphold the values of democracy and press freedom.
He went further to say that, the doors are open; that every journalist has the right to contest for any position.
But being an outstanding journalist who has worked with senior colleagues for a very long time, the Bra Parrot remains skeptical about prezo’s assurances given what he has seen and witnessed during the previous elections, because it has been a usual pattern for the Association’s president to support their secretary generals for particularly the presidency. And there the wise journalist’s skepticism stems. Don’t tell you don’t know about it.
As a result of that sketicism, the bird moved from media house to media house to also sound the views of his colleagues whether they really believe what our outgoing president has said especially allowing a level play field.
Most of the members the bird spoke with told him that they are all aware of that pattern but the bad system had been a hard nut to crack. They expressed disaffection over the ugly system, vowing that this time around they are not going to allow it to continue. “We are going to change that rotten system,” they stressed with anger.
But one question that filled Bra Parrot’s mind is will his desperate colleagues be able to infiltrate the system that has been….practices especially so the top bras of the organization are receiving huge subvention from the national consolidated revenue funds every year.
Some members made it clearly that past and present executive are afraid of allowing level playing field for fear of being exposed for wrongly running the association and also for the purpose of accountability.
From further investigations brave bird discovered that only two people have so far shown interest for the top position (President), the present Secretary General and one Mustapha Sesay.
