As part of activities marking Sierra Leone’s 64th Independence Anniversary, the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), in collaboration with Orange Sierra Leone, embarked on a massive beach cleaning exercise at Aberdeen Beach on Saturday, 26th April, 2025.
Speaking to members of the press, the Executive Director of SLMA, Daniel Kaitibi, stated that the initiative was aimed at restoring the natural beauty of the beach while promoting environmental protection.
“This exercise is part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that our marine environment is clean and safe. Waste, especially plastic, when left on the beach, often end up in the sea, and poses serious threats to marine life. These plastics do not dissolve, they either entangle sea creatures or are mistakenly consumed by them, leading to death,” Kaitibi said.
He pointed out that it is our collective responsibility to protect not only the waters but also the marine life that depends on it.
He emphasized that the initiative brings together key stakeholders to raise awareness and take action in safeguarding Sierra Leone’s coastal and marine resources.
Also speaking at the event, the Director of Shipping and Marine Environment at SLMA, Ronald Moor, reiterated that the institution’s mandate goes beyond safety and security to include environmental sustainability.
“Our role includes ensuring that areas such as beaches and wharfs are regularly cleaned, especially those that could negatively impact marine ecosystems.
He disclosed that Aberdeen Beach is one of the most attractive and frequently visited beaches in Sierra Leone, especially during national celebrations. Keeping it clean is crucial for both locals and tourists,” Moor explained.
He further noted that the SLMA conducts similar cleaning exercises twice a year, starting in the provinces and moving to areas like Aberdeen.
Representing Orange Sierra Leone, the Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, Mohamed Santos Bangura, highlighted the company’s strong environmental commitment.
“At Orange Sierra Leone, environmental protection is one of our key pillars. That is why we take any initiative related to safeguarding the environment very seriously,” Bangura stated.
He added that Orange SL has been collaborating with several institutions across the country on clean up exercises.
He boasted that beyond providing communication services, they are deeply involved in giving back to society through projects in education, healthcare, and environmental conservation.”
He disclosed that last year, Orange Sierra Leone successfully planted over one thousand trees as part of their effort to keep the planet green and fresh.
