The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) has entered into a strategic partnership with Liberia, aiming to bolster operational efficiency and regulatory compliance between Sierra Leone and Liberia maritime institutions.
During a recent signing ceremony at the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) headquarters in Monrovia, SLMA Executive Director Dr. Daniel Kaitibi and his Liberian counterpart, Commissioner Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that prioritizes capacity building, technology transfer, and maritime security.
The agreement is a crucial step in Sierra Leone’s broader strategy to modernize its maritime sector and align itself with regional best practices, and by positioning the nation as a key player in the marine industry.
Dr. Kaitibi, accompanied by SLMA Board Chair Bintu Myers and other senior officials, highlighted the importance of leveraging Liberia’s extensive maritime experience to strengthen Sierra Leone’s regulatory frameworks.
Under his leadership, SLMA is undergoing a swift transformation in increasing revenue generation, enhancing enforcement mechanisms, and working towards meeting international standards in marine operations.
Meanwhile, LiMA officials, including Board Chairman Hon. S. Tornorlah Varpilah, emphasized that the partnership would drive innovation and strengthen regional cooperation, thus ensuring sustainable growth and improved governance in West Africa’s maritime sector.
