The Wise Bird has been getting sleepless nights just thinking about what is the reason (s) for the continuous traffic hold-up in the main streets in the capital Freetown.
In order to get true and correct story, the brave bird starts to fly from West-end to the East-end part of the capital city of Freetown.
The bird noticed three things that are responsible for the continuous traffic jam in the capital Freetown.
Firstly, the roads are too small for a two way traffic in and out of the Central Business District (CBD).
Secondly, a lot of vehicles are parked on both sides of the road un-necessary, some are parked permanently; take for instance Fourah Bay Road big trucks are parked on both parts of the road permanently causing heavy traffic jam on a daily basis.
Thirdly, the traffic police officers themselves are sometimes responsible for traffic congestion in the city by way of stopping vehicles un-necessarily to collect bribes and making arrangements with drivers for their daily bookings.
The Wise Bird noticed that, in front of East End Police Station there is always heavy traffic jam, where about six (6) or more traffic police officers are standing controlling traffic, can you imagine.
The Wise Bird is very much au fait with the police code of practices, in the 60s,70s 80s and the 90s police officers do not stay in one police station for more than one(1) year in order not to compromise their jobs.
But today in Sierra Leone, police officers are in one particular police station for more than five (5) years, so all so with traffic police, some traffic police have spent almost their time in Traffic Division.
So, plus minus bribing starts in the police force, some police officers bribe so that, they continue to stay in the traffic division as long as possible.
The same goes at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) some police officers have been at the CID for rest of their life time in the police, many a time some of them compromised cases.
As for the Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA) there is nothing to write home about that department.
When a police officer stays in one particular station for long he/she will have the tendency to have less authority over suspected criminals and even have less control over junior workers.
This is more the reason there is always lawlessness between the drivers and traffic police officers because of usage.
As for the Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA) there is nothing good to write home about them, everything is up-side down.
The Wise Bird went out to sound the views of people in respect of the continuous traffic jam, all those the bird met gave the same reasons as the bird as given.
The Wise Bird will continue to monitor the sale of vehicles licenses and many more.
