The Ministry of Sports on Sunday, April 6, 2025, in an inspiring collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, proudly spearheaded Sierra Leone’s commemoration of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Themed “Leaving the Playing Field: Promoting Physical Activity for Health.” This vibrant celebration underscored the integral role that sports play in fostering health, unity, and national advancement.
The festivities kicked off at the Youyi Building, where an enthusiastic assembly of officials, sports association leaders, and community members gathered.
The anticipation was palpable as they set off on a lively street procession through the bustling streets of Freetown, filled with cheers, music, and spirited displays of athleticism.
The vibrant march culminated at the scenic Beach Volleyball Complex located at Lumley Beach, where a variety of interactive sports activities were organized to promote both physical well-being and a sense of social cohesion among participants.
Madam Augusta James Teima, the Minister of Sport, captivated the audience with a heartfelt address that emphasized the transformative power of sport. She articulated that sport extends beyond mere physical fitness; it serves as a robust mechanism for inclusion, empowerment, and the cultivation of peace. Her powerful words emphasized that sports are structured endeavors, capable of instigating profound life changes far beyond the physical realm.
The Minister expressed profound gratitude for the unwavering support provided by the WHO and the Ministry of Health, highlighting their invaluable contributions to offering health screenings and wellness services to event participants. She made a compelling call for increased investments in sports infrastructure, capacity-building initiatives, and fair compensation for athletes and technical staff. Her fervent appeal highlighted the urgent need to bridge the disparity in opportunities and incentives that exist between male and female athletes.
Addressing pressing societal issues, Minister James Teima championed the potential of sport to serve as a formidable ally in combating poverty, addressing climate challenge, and curbing youth-related vices such as drug abuse. She urged the nation to shed antiquated perceptions that link sports participation to school dropout rates, instead shining a light on its status as a legitimate profession grounded in scientific principles, discipline, and governance.
The celebration also took the time to recognize remarkable achievements across various sports disciplines, including a notable bronze medal win in bodybuilding by the media association. This accolade exemplified the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a wide array of sporting talents beyond the realm of football.
As Sierra Leone joyfully joined the global community in honouring this significant day, the Ministry of Sport reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to harnessing sport as a unifying force for national progress, peace, and health. Citizens were warmly encouraged to actively participate, share their journeys intertwined with sports, and support the national initiative by connecting potential donors to the Ministry or the National Sports Council.
