Riding on old glory and standing in near ruins for decades, the Bo School has suddenly seen a transformation that is unprecedented. Some would say it is because one of theirs has become the President of the country, and that might not be far from the truth. Truth be told further, there is a new administration now in the school, that is determined to match the standard of the school with the status it enjoys within and without.
The previous government for obvious reasons, did not give Bo School the attention it deserved as an institution created by the government of Sierra Leone way back in 1906 for the education of the sons and nominees of Paramount Chiefs. Over time, it became a conveyor belt for the production of excellent pupils across all educational disciplines. Names like Salia Jusu Sheriff, Sama Banya, Lamin Hassan to name but a few, were academic giants whose educational seeds were planted in Bo School.
The neglect of the previous government, however did not deter the alumni association from cushioning the effects of it on the school. OBBA, most people would agree is the most vibrant alumni association in Sierra Leone, believe it or not. They have unity, cohesion and camaraderie that few can rival but none can beat.
With the exit of the former principal Mr. Musa I. Amara, who did his best to maintain sanity in the school, and the advent of a new administration (though acting), there is a fresh breath of air in Bo School. There is renewed belief in Bo School boys and a reinvigorated spirit of the best among the rest. Perhaps there is the additional catalyst of the presidency of the country, but Bo School boys have always exuded confidence and excellence, since the inception of the school in 1906.
Under the present administration headed by Mr. Evans Kweku Nyarkoh, the lost glory is gradually returning, and the transformation has begun. The facelift of the school greets you right from the gate. From an old fashioned piece of iron sheets pieced by some carpenter that passed for a gate, the new gate depicts the real image of Bo School – well designed eye catching metal work painted in the school colours. Upon entering the campus, there is a sprawling new garden on the left side of the entrance, with elegant poles of light sprinkled in the garden that gives you a feeling of entering a restaurant in China. Going further down, the classroom blocks renovated by the UK/I branch in 2017, stand gallantly telling a story of a new Bo School. Then on the left just opposite the carpentry shop (known fondly as woodwork lab) is a well garnished staff quarter, that had begged for paint for a very long time. The serenity and aesthetics of the campus is further reinforced when you take a stroll to the dormitories, that once looked like a piggery. The dormitories (towns as the Bo School boys call them) are all varnished in the different colours of green (Paris), red (London), yellow (Liverpool) and blue (Manchester). If you think OBBA and the current administration are concerned about just the facelift, you are mistaken. The blocks where the students dwell are a different proposition these days. With the help of the OBBA USA branch, 400 bunker beds were constructed and installed in all the blocks. Additionally, 800 foams were made available to the school by OBBA branches and equitably supplied to the pupils by the administration.
To ensure proper WASH facility for the boys, the current administration with the help of OBBA branches has reconstructed the school’s well and is now providing water for the school round the clock. This has significantly reduced the prevalence of water borne diseases like typhoid amongst the pupils. In addition to that, the Kweku Nyarkoh led administration is presently constructing a clinic on campus for the school. This is intended to create a holding facility for sick pupils who would be checked by a medical personnel and first aid treatment administered there. If the situation is beyond the control of the school’s clinic, the sick pupil will be referred to another hospital for further treatment. This has a knock on effect on the reduction of bound breaking among pupils, who normally sneak out of campus on the pretext of going to the hospital.
In order to make Bo School more competitive and to keep the vision of His Excellency the President Julius Maada Bio of a science and technology world alive, the administration of Mr. Evans Kweku Nyarkoh has established a second computer lab, whilst upgrading the first. Entrance into Bo School is no longer at the whim or caprice of a few people but open, competitive and stringent. The new administration has instituted and entrance examination system which sets entrance exams for pupils wishing to attend the school.
Several other strides have been undertaken by the new administration of the great Bo School to make it the envy of West Africa again, and with the support of government and OBBA, the school is set to take off. Disciplinary measures set by an undertaking signed by parents are now enforced with no room for compromise. Teachers, pupils and parents are all applauding the efforts of new acting administration and are proud of the new look Bo School.
