The Minister of Foreign Affair and International Cooperation, Timothy Kabba, has informed Members of Parliament that his Ministry has recalled its Ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura to Freetown.
He told Members of Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs that the withdrawal is following the seizure of an Embassy vehicle and the arrest of its drivers by Guinean authorities.
According to Minister Kabba the incident which occurred on January 13, 2025, involved the seizure of a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leone Embassy in Conakry by the Guinean authorities.
He maintained that the driver and another Sierra Leonean in the vehicle were detained on suspicion of possessing substances believed to be cocaine.
In response to this development, Minister Timothy said the Government of Sierra Leone had launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to hold all responsible parties accountable for causing such an embarrassment.
He revealed that initially his Ministry had issued a statement confirming the recall of Ambassador Bangura and emphasising the government’s commitment to cooperating with Guinean authorities to ascertain the facts of the matter.
He maintained that they underscored the gravity of the situation and reiterated the government’s unwavering stance against drug trafficking.
The Minister affirmed that anyone found guilty of violating Sierra Leonean and international drug trafficking laws would face the full force of the law.
He stressed that the incident had raised significant concerns and prompted a swift response from the Sierra Leonean government.
He said the recall of Ambassador Bangura demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding the integrity of its diplomatic missions and ensuring the safety and security of its diplomatic personnel.
He however, gives government assurance that the ministry will provide regular updates on the ongoing investigation and take all necessary measures to address this serious amicably.
He said Ambassador Bangura is still the the substantive diplomat assigned to Guinea as an Ambassador and he has not yet be remove from his duties.
