In his presentation to the president of the ECOWAS Commission, in a plenary sitting of ECOWAS parliament held on the 10th of July 2024, Hon. Abdul Kargbo urged the ECOWAS Commission to pay great attention to the implementation of the “Agreement for a National Unity.”
The agreement was signed by the Government of Sierra Leone and the main opposition All People’s Congress Party.
According to Hon. Abdul Kargbo, there are 8 resolutions in the agreement, most of which are yet to be implemented.
He informed the ECOWAS Parliament that opposition supporters are still in prison whilst some are still attending politically motivated court cases.
He further disclosed that most of the resolutions have not been implemented, and the ECOWAS’ commission should ensure that “every word or letter” in the agreement is respected.
He also urged ECOWAS to protect former presidents in all member states.
He mentioned a case study for Sierra Leone and Liberia where a former president of one of these countries was prevented from accessing a President Lodge.
He said former presidents have huge fan bases in their countries, and so their protection always will surely enhance “political stability” in these member states.
