The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio has recently faced series of high-profile resignations signaling turbulence within the government and raising questions about the administration’s stability and direction.
In just few months, the departures of Solomon Jamiru Esq, Dr. Abass Bundu, and more recently, Kanja Sesay, have sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Sierra Leone.
Other Sierra Leoneans continue to ask questions as to why officials in the current administration are resigning from their positions at a time when these people are needed most.
In February 2024, Solomon Jamiru Esq, the Press Secretary to President Julius Maada Bio, tendered his resignation, citing inexplinable personal reasons.
Jamiru had been a prominent figure within the administration, serving as the voice of the presidency and managing communications with the media.
His departure left a void in the government’s public relations machinery thus raising concerns about its ability to effectively communicate with the public and manage its image amid growing challenges.
Dr. Abass Bundu who holds the third highest position in the land resigned as Speaker two weeks ago.
The Speaker according to the State House release resigned based on medical grounds and that the President Julius Maada Bio graciously accepted his resignation and thanked the retired Speaker for his contributions towards national development over the years.
Speaker Bundu held the Speakership position since 2018 and exited the position just two weeks ago.
Many quarters view his resignation owing to intra-party political steam boiling over him. Others say Speaker Bundu’s age is almost ticking to retirement.
Some MPs said Speaker Bundu retired based on what had transpired in recent times in a fracas between him and Hon. Paran Tarawally on the choosing of the ECOWAS Parliament delegation.
“Speaker Bundu needs to retire now because he has been in all past and present governments and moreover he is among those that formulate the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone,” one of the MPs expressed his opinion.
In less than two weeks, the Minister of Energy, Kanja Sesay, also hung his boots as minister.
His reason for his resignation is still doubtful to the public, but social media comments have it that Mr Kanja Sesay, may have resigned due to the current debacle on power outage across the country.
Other school of thoughts have said his resignation is in connection to his recent poor health condition.
It is also believed that government Finance Ministry plays a sabotage on the failure of the outgone energy minister to commit himself to the Karpowership, Turkish energy supplier.
In few days before the resignation of the minister, some doctors reported the deaths of a child at PCMH hospital due to a power outage.
This brought serious criticism against the minister and his ministry from all quarters.
To date, residents especially in Freetown still sleep in the dark.
Many have perceived the capital as the darkest in the world while others are mounting serious pressure on the governmentreferring to the energy minister as absolutely ineffective.
