The United Methodist University (UMU) in Liberia has held its 20th Congregation at Liberty, Christian Center, Johnsonville Monstserrado.
A highlight of the ceremony was the conferral of an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree upon Bishop James Boye-Caulker, the esteemed leader of the United Methodist Church (UMC) Sierra Leone Annual Conference.
Bishop Boye-Caulker, who was elected as bishop in December 2024 during the West Africa Central Conference in Accra, Ghana, has been a dedicated servant in the ministry for over 34 years.
Prior to his episcopal election, he’s served as the district superintendent of the United Methodist Church Sierra Leone’s Western District since 2016.
His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Theology from Gbarnga School of Theology in Liberia, a diploma in theology from Cliff College in England, and a Master of Philosophy in Theology from the University of Sierra Leone.
He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone.
Prior to the conferral of the Doctorate Degree, while addressing graduates, Bishop Boye-Caulker emphasized the importance of service, integrity, and commitment to community development.
He encouraged graduates to utilize their education for the betterment of society by embodying the core values of the United Methodist Church.
The UMU’s decision to honour Bishop Boye-Caulker underscores his significant contributions to theological education and his unwavering dedication to the church’s mission in West Africa.
Right Rev Dr, James Boye-Caulker was admired for his dedicated service to the church and humanity over the years as minister of the Gospel, as an astute District Superintendent, an assertive Administrator and a servant leader.
As a gratitude for his exemplary record of church leadership and service, the Charter and Board of Directors of the United Methodist University conferred the degree of Doctor of Divinty (D.D) Honoris Causa with all right and privileges appertaining thereto on Bishop Rt, Rev James Boye-Caulker.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, faculty, graduates, and their families, thus marking a memorable milestone in the university’s history.
