United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, David Bryan Hunt, has stepped down from his position effective today, though no reasons have yet been provided for his sudden departure.
In the meantime, Jared Yancey, the current Chargé d’affaires, will oversee operations at the US Embassy in Freetown until a new ambassador is nominated and confirmed by Washington.
Ambassador Hunt, a career diplomat and member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counsellor, began his assignment in Sierra Leone on September 11, 2023. His appointment was widely seen as a strong choice, given his extensive experience in African affairs and senior-level diplomatic leadership.
Before taking up the post in Freetown, Hunt served as Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the United States Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. In Washington, he held key roles in the Bureau of African Affairs, overseeing the Office of South Sudan and Sudan and later serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Africa and Sudan.
His overseas career was equally distinguished. Hunt was Deputy Chief of Mission at US embassies in Mozambique, Guyana, and Papua New Guinea. He also spent six years in Pakistan, where he served as Consul General in Lahore, Political Counsellor in Islamabad, and Principal Officer at the Lahore consulate.
Diplomatic observers have noted that his deep policy expertise and regional knowledge played a significant role in shaping his time as ambassador in Sierra Leone. For now, however, details surrounding the reasons for his resignation remain unclear, leaving questions about what prompted the decision.
