Many Sierra Leoneans still popularly believe that the backwardness of this tiny West African nation with a population less than half of a state in Nigeria is the misuse of the numerous God-given resources by mainly our politicians over the period.
Of course, their belief or assertion is quite in place, considering the fact that they have been and still managers of these endowments who have never by chance gave correct information of how they are used.
Spanning from independence exactly sixty-four (64) years ago, no government has ever given transparent or accountable use of these riches; their management has largely remained shrouded, given credence to the popular maxim: “Amidst plenty the people still dwell in poverty.”
But there are much more to this than people really believe that mismanagement of resources is responsible for the misery of the people of the country all this while.
Quite apart from the perceived mismanagement, corruption e’tal, another notable factor responsible for our backwardness is the “Pull Him Down” syndrome where people in high places not only in politics are being targeted for obvious reasons.
Many decent people with dignity and pride who have been held in high esteem have fallen prey. Reputable people of God have not been spared.
Victims have lost their hard won reputations, jobs and or separated from families as a result of this nefarious act. This ugly scenario has undoubtedly had devastating knock on effect not only on individual victims but largely on the development of this country.
These heartless and anti-development agents often treat their victims without mercy and can go to the length of destroying their lives if they so desire.
Until this narrative is changed, it will be difficult, if not impossible for this country to progress in spite of the numerous natural endowments we always boast of.
