It has been a commonplace in this kingdom where news gatherers have become unnecessary targets by those in public positions for simply exposing their evils in society.
Many journalists have not only been threatened by word of mouth but to the extent that some are even arrested, beating, tortured and detained.
The Parrot cannot even attempt to list the names of journalists who have suffered that way in the hands of their perpetrators for the sake of limited space.
This unfair treatment against media practitioners in this republic has continued unabated despite human rights and civil society organizations including the nation’s media umbrella body, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) opposition to it, a development they have described as war against press freedom.
On a daily basis, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has continued to issue press statements condemning the actions of certain set of individuals against its members across the country.
In a latest press statement, SLAJ condemned the verbal threats against one of its members by a certain individual connected to the ruling house of this nation.
The release described the threat as unconstitutional and very dangerous citing the 1991 Constitution as the foundation of media Freedom.
The release further cited section 11 which guarantees that the press shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objective contained in the national Constitution.
The release furthered that, the entire membership is deeply disturbed by the report that threatens the live (s) of journalists at every given time.
On his side, the President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists urged the Sierra Leone Police to launch a swift investigation into the incident to ensure that, journalists can continue their work without fear or intimidation.
The President added that the Association is in full solidarity with the affected journalist and all other journalists in the country.
The bird as usual gets in touch with various people in society; they all in totality condemned the act, adding that no nation will develop without the support of the media.
Some of the people even attributed the action to government’s plan to embarrass the journalists, because nowhere in the World a notice is given where a warrant has been issued.
The bird is waiting to see how far the investigation will go, if at all.
