The Wise Bird has lived a little longer on planet Earth knowing government after government, leader after leader on how they can handle national issues.
The most respected animal is very much pessimistic about coming into force the new traffic regulations. We take into consideration how the system has been totally polarized by both past and present governments.
The Wise Bird was present at the Police Headquarters’ usual press briefing on 11th January,2025 where senior Police Officers and stakeholders of the Sierra Leone Commercial Motorbike Riders Union (SLCMRU) held a meeting to discuss the new traffic regulations set to take effect on the 1st February, 2025.
However, from what the bird has gathered from the meeting, about 35 designated streets in the Central Business District (CBD) are identified for the smooth operation of other vehicles.
According to the Director of Operations, Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr. John Martin Senesie who was very economical in his words, said among other things they needed cooperation between motorbike riders and the law enforcement agency, adding no one is above the law.
He went further to say that, if Sierra Leone develops, “we all can benefit, and if we fall we all will fall together.”
He, however, urged citizen to respect the law for the greater good of the country.
He called on the Union leadership and civil society to help spread the message to the wider public.
He went on to say that, they also recognized the important role the bike riders play in society.
In his contribution, the Director of Traffic Management and Road safety, Commissioner of police Mr. Abdul Moijueh, cited the past conflicts between police and the motorbike riders that resulted to the loss of lives.
The problem the most respected animal has is that, governments after governments have tried to remove the commercial motorbike riders from the CBD, but they all have failed over the years and so will they succeed this time round?
The bird could remember when Late President Alhaji Ahmed Tejan Kabbah tried to act on this but he failed, and Former President Ernest Bai Koroma also tried but he too failed to get these people out.
The President in his first term in office had tried but he failed woefully.
Will he succeed this time especially as he wants his party to continue in power come 2028?
The brave bird went out to sound the views of people on the issue, all those the bird spoke to are pessimistic.
They said, “let’s wait and see come 1st February 2025.”
The bird will keep close eyes on the operations.
