During the last parliament sitting, the Deputy Clerk of Parliament Mr. Lebbie was instructed to write letters of invitations to the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) including the Inspector General IGP Williams Fayia Sellu, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Andrew Jaiah Kaikai among the relevant stakeholders to give details on the influx of drug in the country.
MPs said the rate at which the drugs are imported into the country is threatening.
Hon. Silikie assured that as the people’s representatives they are concerned about the dramatic in taking of drugs by youth and its importation into Sierra Leone.
He said the reason led for calling upon the MDAs is to sit down together to fine a ‘ away forward’ to address the drug menace in the country.
The deputy leader confirmed that most of these ‘ghettos’ run in many communities are very closed to police stations.
He said as lawmakers they will do all they can to eradicate Kush and to drastically reduce its consumption rate.
He assured that fingers are being pointed at the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), The He disclosed that the worst is that teenagers are now taking the drug.
Hon. Bashiru assured that if they started get rid of the retailers, ‘intakers’ and the importers thus they will be able to reduce it.
He said he had been seeing on social media SLP and military personnel being intoxicated with the drug, adding that they are concerned as they wanted to know wether those officers are arrested or not.
He said a way forward needed to be sought and to explore necessary suggestions.
“We cannot degenerated this country into drugs state , we cannot,” Hon. Silikie assured.
He said they can do all what they could to eradicate or reduce the drug in the country.
He said the fight is a cross party and assured that whatever will be the outcome of the stakeholders meeting will be a big step in the fight against the drug.
Hon. Silikie said the situation is embrassing to the state as it is affecting everyone in one way or the other.
He stressed that it is not about APC and SLPP, but they are interested on the people they are represented.
“Though other Africa countries are taking in the drug, Sierra Leone has labbled as a hub for transporting drug” he affirmed.
The Chief Whip of the ruling government in Parliament Hon. Dickson Rogers representing Pujehun District said, Sierra Leone is used a hub for the drug though other Africa countries are taking in the drug.
He encouraged the judiciary of Sierra Leone to ensure that they give the right sentences and jailed term for those who found wanton.
The country’s Inspector General of Police IGP Williams Fayia Sellu giving his status report on Kush highlighted some of the challenges in the fight to tackle drugs.
