The Speaker has stated that the fight against the synthetic drug ( kush) requires a collaborative effort.
He said the drug signals of horrors are everywhere and are a clear evil.
“Synthetic drugs are destroying our youths and ultimately the future of our country,” he vehemently disclosed.
Therefore, he said, drug addiction is a threat to national security because it endangers the national health and the well-being of youths who constitute a significant proportion of the population.
He said the fight demands immediate and effective action from all organs and all levels of government to address the menace.
The Speaker went on, “at home, we must rein against the manufacturers, importers, and distributors.”
Some of these people, he said, are known to the authorities and so action must be taken now and we must tolerate no sacred cows.
He said the fight also demands much more effort.
Dr Bundu said a concerted action is necessary at national, regional, and international levels to deal effectively with the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of the synthetic drugs across the borders.
“Youths will only use the drugs when the drugs are available,” he maintained.
“New policies are therefore required from governments and new legislations are also required from parliament.”
The Speaker informed that unless action is quickly applied or else the menace will continue to grow and soon it will become a serious threat to national security and the future of the nation. “I am therefore calling on all relevant committees of parliament to work together and propose prompt and effective measures to address this problem,” he said.
“Delays will compound the problem as it will grow more and more dangerous and consume the whole country.”
He said action must come from within the country and they should not depend on outsiders to come and solve the problem home.
“So let’s galvanize the necessary national efforts,” he concluded.
