Citizens interviewed by this medium over the 2nd alleged attempted coup in six months since President Julius Maada Bio was declared winner in the June 24th multitier elections have expressed great concern over the future of Sierra Leone and in particular the security of its citizenry which many say are violation of their fundamental rights.
Mr. Gibrilla Koroma of Koroma Street Waterloo said, that the statement of the Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Peter Lavahun that 2 vehicles, 6 bombs and 15AK 47 riffles were apprehended at the mountain of Orugu community, Upper Allen Town has ignited fear in them as this is the first time that Sierra Leoneans have learned of bombs being used with the intention to overthrow a legitimate government. He said we shouldn’t have gone that, noting dialogue is the appropriate solution to settle scores.
Madam Dr. Henrietta Will of Mile 13 said, she thought that after the recent dialogue the foreign mediation between the APC and SLPP and the return to parliament by APC MPs everything would have been over. She said the military is expected to live by its professional ethics and don’t take us back to the days of the likes of Johnny Paul who kidnapped their franchise until he was booted out by the ECOWAS intervention forces, ECOMOG.
Alhaji Mansour Turay of Bambara Town on the other hand noted that people should only aspire for power if they are qualified and within the ambit of the law. He said the recent ugly development will not only affect the perpetrators but citizens as well as investors. He says, until we respect our constitutional dictates or force others to respect it, Sierra Leone’s future will be like a football gamble.
