The just concluded 13th delegates’ conference of the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) by every indication was just a mere show of flamboyance (Papy show).
Afterwards, the party had long since held its delegates’ conference in Kenema city where national executives were duly elected and President Julius Maada Bio was unanimously endorsed as the party’s standard bearer for the June 24th 2023 presidential election.
The only unique thing about the Bintumani gathering was the announcement by President Julius Maada Bio of Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh as his running mate for his final term. Apart from that, nothing absolutely more was important about that conference than plenty bogus (buku) talk and waste of state resources while Sierra Leoneans continue to wallow in abject poverty.
Candidly, there was no need for such a conference at this point in time. The resources wasted on that event would have been better spent on other important issues such as buying enough brail and other learning materials for School for the Blind (Blind School).
What is expected of every responsible government is to address the plight of its citizens, but what we are experiencing though is the sharp contrast. Instead of addressing the acute economic situation, our government is hell bent on lavishing the little available resources with impunity.
There is no gainsaying that pressure on ordinary Sierra Leoneans is becoming too much and unbearable, that even those who are employed keep crying that there salaries do not match their living standards. The cost of living is exponentially high. The prices of essential commodities keep soaring and the country’s currency the leone, keeps depreciating against the all mighty United States dollar which in every respect has exacerbated the situation.
For heaven’s sake when will the government consider to address the plight of the suffering people it claims to be governing? The ‘I don’t care’ attitude of the government cannot be over emphasized given that all it gives priority to is to satisfy the needs of those that are in its employ leaving the masses to bake in their own sweat. But time will surely come when nemesis will catch up with them.
