A female Member of Parliament from Moyamba district, Honourable Veronica Kadie Sesay on Tuesday 26 March 2024 was elected and she took the seat of the Speaker to preside over Tuesday’s plenary sitting in the Sierra Leone parliament.
In the absence of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker and in conformity with paragraph C of Section 88 of the 1991 Constitution, Veronica Kadie Sesay took the seat as Speaker of Parliament.
Members of Parliament from both sides of the aisle expressed their congratulations to Hon female speaker for being the first female MPs in the 6th Parliament to take the seat as Speaker in the chambers of the Sierra Leone Parliament.
They said the development is part of the MP’s women representation in governance as well as working towards 30 per cent quota for women.
The APC MP from Tonkolili district who doubles as the Deputy Leader of opposition, Hon Aaron Koroma, sent his congratulations to Hon Veronica Kadie Sesay for her speakership, adding that this shows the level of given political power to women.
The MP from Kono District, Hon Emerson Saa Lamina also made her passionate congratulatory message for the election of the Female MP as Speaker for the Tuesday’s sitting.
Meanwhile, the newly elected speaker presided over the sitting with the ratification of military framework agreement between the government of Sierra Leone and Turkey as well as military cooperation protocols between the Ministry of Defence of the Arab Republic of Egypt and Sierra Leone.
The agreement is posed to capacitate the military of these countries.
The newly elected female speaker perfectly presided over the sitting and the agreements were passed into law.
