The duly elected former Member of Parliament, Hon Sirajin Rollings Kamara reminds MPs of their previous eviction from parliament.
He told the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Segepoh Solomon Thomas that he was one among the 10 MPs who the SLPP government had removed as Member of Parliaments and were replaced with SLPP’s party’s members.
Hon Suraji Rollings Kamara said they were removed after the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) had certified their wining in 2018.
“Yet we go without benefits,” he said.
He said the court ruling, at the time, replaced 10 of them without an election conducted.
“Mr Speaker, you need to help us get our 11 months’ [salaries] we had worked for before we were removed,” he pleade.
Hon Suraji Rollings Kamara made the submissions on Monday 14th July 2024 during a curtsey visit of the former MPs to the new speaker.
MPs said they have collectively formed an Association comprising former MPs.
The association is hoped to complement the speaker’s effort in fostering development in the country.
The Speaker of Parliament, Hon Segepoh Solomon Thomas, thanked the former MPs for their laudable initiative.
Hon Thomas said former MPs have enormous ideas on parliamentary processes and procedures as they had been in parliament.
Speaker Thomas said, he would ensure that the association thrives and becomes a viable organ to help parliament and the government.
“I am aware that former MPs do not easily have access to jobs because people may be scared of them because of their influence.”
He said as a result, most former MPs are engaged in private businesses.
“I will make sure by next year my office will advice for budget allocation for former MPs who can use that money to help parliament in its work,” he assured.
