Senior authorities of the University of Sierra Leone (USL) have touted robust plans to curb massive failures among students within the three constituent colleges.
USL’s three constituent colleges are: Fourah Bay College (FBC); Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) and College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS).
During an orientation ceremony at FBC campus, the authorities warned that students who don’t fail more than two modules in one sitting will be allowed to take re-sit exams.
But if they happen to fail the said deferred exams, they will be expelled from the university immediately.
The University of Sierra Leone is determined to enforce the new regulation on poor performing students starting this academic year, 2024-25.
“Starting this academic year, there will be no repeating in Year 1, and no student will progress to Year 2 with a reference (a fail in a module).
“In the event they fail to pass the referred module (s), they will be withdrawn from the course and the college,” a short note by USL partially reads which was signed by the Deputy Register, Brima Bah on Tuesday 16 January, 2016.
Reacting to a notice by the University of Sierra Leone, a graduate from the Institute of Public Administration and Management said the idea was a good one as it would “weed out” the weaker students from the three colleges.
“There are a lot of students these days who could not speak better English or express themselves well or perform well in their respective courses. So the pronouncement by the university to curb out these kinds of students is a nice decision,” says Mohamed Turay, once a student of Applied Accounting at IPAM.
