The Deputy Leader of opposition All People’s Congress party (APC) in parliament, Hon Daniel Koroma, has disclosed to the media that they have been told about an ongoing secret review of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone by the government.
The Deputy Leader of opposition made the disclosure at a press conference organized by the APC Parliamentary group in the APC Secretariats in Freetown.
Hon Koroma also drew the attention of the public about the procedures and processes involved in changing the constitution especially by law it requires a two third majority approval in parliament.
He said the APC would allow a change of constitution that reflects the will of Sierra Leoneans, adding that the APC would not accommodate any vague changes on the constitution which should reflect the interests of the masses.
“Even to change a dot in the constitution requires two third majorities. If anyone changes a dot or comma in the law books it is tantamount to treason,” he maintained.
Hon Koroma said the APC itself had started the Constitutional review process but after the regime changed in 2018 the current administration (SLPP) is understood to be reviewing the constitution without any consultation.
According to Hon Koroma the APC will be very much in place to support the review processes but will not support a process that is done in secrecy.
Recently, an erudite lawyer, Basita Michael also raised serious concerns over the secret constitutional review processes which she said, if it’s true, it is done unconstitutionally without collaboration.
Many media outlets of recent have also lamented on the same issues which they perceive as wrong.
