The young and dynamic Member of Parliament from Kenema district Hon. Alie Bayoh has praised the Ministry of Finance for the 2024 National budget which despite the opposition condemnation of the document said it is an “honest budget.” He said this during the ongoing debate of the national budget 2024 at the Chamber of Parliament. The lawmaker highlighted the tremendous work of the Ministry which he said has transformed the socio-economic development of the country.
The charismatic MP also described the Minister of Finance as also an honest man who he said is fully aware that there is an increase in the cost of living, which they cannot shy away from the reality. However, the minister has made it clear that it is not their own making thus attributing the problem to global economic problem/crises especially the Covid 19, Ukraine and Russia war amongst others.
The MP alluded to the fact that the negative effect of the Ukraine- Russia war coupled with international shock on economic crises had impacted negatively on the economy of Sierra Leone.
The MP said the 1991 constitution strongly spelt out the roles and functions of lawmakers, relating to law-making, representation and oversight. He said MPs should make sure they represent their people well especially when it comes to national issues whilst urging his colleagues to criticize the budget but positively.
Hon. Bayoh said the Ministry of Finance outlined solutions for the FY2024 budget and informed that the government of President Bio cares for its people. The MP said the budget could be critical but at the same time proffers solution at the end.
From a sociological perspective, governance, and leadership point of view, Hon. Bayoh described the 2024 budget as an “implementation and actualization budget come 2024 next year.”
He concluded by summarizing the importance of the budget in national development, and clarified certain issues raised by the previous speakers on diversity in the price of rice. The MP stressed the spillover of the global economy into Sierra Leone and advised colleague MPs to proffer solutions during their debate whilst underscoring the necessity of service delivery and performance.
