The National Telecommunication Authority’s manager and senior official from the Economic Regulations and Competition,Alexcious B. Ansumana have explained the Commission’s mandate which is to license and regulate all ICT service providers operating in Sierra Leone.
They were addressing attendees at the Consumer Protection Agency’s program during the commemoration of World Telecom Day on Saturday 18th May 2024,
He said the CPA also manages and assigns the national frequency spectrum, manages the national numbering plan as well as to ensure fair competition and investment in the sector.
The mandate is also to protect the users or consumers of ICT products and services, and to promote the progressive development of ICTs in Sierra Leone.
The agency also supports Universal Access to ICT services, promote Cyber Security and Resilient Cyber Space and as well enforce SIM/UIM Card Registration Regulations.
Mr Ansumana said the authority has been working with consumer related organizations, adding that their role in the Telecom industry cannot be overemphasized.
Ibrahim Kabia, President of Consumer Protection Agency, said this year’s commemoration of Telecom day, marks an important milestone in the history of Telecom in Sierra Leone.
He said the day is important because it is a way of remembrance of the role Telecoms have played around the world.
He thanked Qcell mobile company for honouring their invitation irrespective of their busy schedule.
Mr Kabia showered praises on Qcell, describing it as one of the cheapest and fastest growing mobile companies in the country.
He called on them to continue providing quality services to the nation.
Qcell Head of Marketing, Edward Nelson Pratt said since Qcell came to Sierra Leone in 2019, their services to their valued subscribers are second to none.
He said since 2019 to date, they have been able to cover the 14 districts of Sierra Leone providing reliable and unshakable network.
He maintained that they are the only mobile company that has introduced fiber cable to boost their network system.
And since the introduction of this fiber cable their network is second to none.
He disclosed that in order to further maintain a reliable, affordable and efficient network across the country, they are poised to bring in a 5G network as soon as possible.
By way of easing or reducing their subscribers stress; of moving from one point to the other in search of EDSA metre-top up, they have introduced Qmoney which he said is now available across the country.
In terms of social corporate services, the company is doing everything humanly possible to meet its obligations.
Chairman of the programme, Mr Komeh highlighted the significance of the world Telecom day.
